Silk Paintings - Qumran

I am fascinated by the discoveries of archeology. I find it extremely exciting to learn about people's lives and habits thousands of years ago. There is always a mystical aura around these stories...

In 1947 a Bedouin shepherd was searching for a stray goat in the Judean Desert. Accidently he found jars filled with ancient scrolls in a hidden cave. That discovery resulted in a sensational archeological excavation, lasting nearly a decade. More caves were found and more scrolls, thousands of fragments, dating from a period of 300 BC to 68 AD, within a time when Jesus of Nazareth lived.

In the same area archeologists excavated the Qumran ruins, a complex of structures located on a terrace between the cliffs where the caves were found and the Dead Sea. The home of the Essener? Until today it is not clear whether scrolls and the nearby settlement whose inhabitants are still unknown, have any connection and why the scrolls were hidden in the caves. The debate continues.

The silk painting is mounted on stretcher bars and is gallery wrapped (stapled on the back - sides are painted) and can be hung with or without additional frame (please see above link). It will be shipped without additional frame though.

I recommend framing the painting in an additional sophisticated frame if that blends well into your interior. This would complement the silk of the painting perfectly.

The painting's reverse side is protected by another layer of fabric. These silk paintings do not request different handling than oils or other artwork: dry environment and no direct sunlight. Silk Carving from the Hawaiian Symbols Series - Ho'okipa

Ho'okipa is a silk carving© and belongs to the series of Hawaiian Symbols. Each of these symbols picks one special characteristic of the Hawaiian Islands. This one, Ho'okipa, is one of them.

Who would not know about this famous beach where the world's most famous surfers have ridden the waves - huge waves! What could be a better representation for the Hawaiian islands than the beautiful ocean and its never ending surf and waves?

Here are some details of this silk carving:

Ho'okipa incorporates a technique called "silk carving©", which is a development by myself and was born out of the trapunto techniques of quilting but uses multiple layers. The intent of this technique was to create a symbiosis between carving and fiber art. The surface of the fiber was transformed completely into a relief.

The upper layer of this piece was made from one single piece of silk - nothing has been sewn on top to add depth. Additionally opaque paints were used in a manner to give the visual impression of the foam and spray that always comes along with the waves when they break.

Silk Carving from the Hawaiian Symbols Series - Pele

Pele is a silk carving© and belongs to the series of Hawaiian Symbols. Each of these symbols picks one special characteristic of the Hawaiian Islands. This one Pele is one of them.

What could be a better representation for the fire goddess Pele than the lava she creates and what the Hawaiian islands are made of?

Here are some details of this silk carving:

Pele incorporates a technique called "silk carving©", which is a development by myself and was born out of the trapunto techniques but uses multiple layers. The intent of this technique was to create a symbiosis between carving and fiber art.
The surface of the fiber was transformed completely into a relief. The upper layer of this piece was made from one single piece of silk - nothing was sewn on top to add depth. Additionally paints and pigments were used in a manner to give the visual impression of flowing lava in all its glowing colours and the viewer is supposed to feel the heat. But it is "only" a piece of soft sculptured silk.
